Going to try and update this journal more.  I've just had the itch for more journaly-type posts recently and on Tumblr, I feel like anything I say can and will be used against me.  I love that tags allow you to find other people with similar interests, but then if I tag criticism of something, I get ravaged by the fans who believe the tag should only be for positive posts.  I agree that making a hate-filled post and then tagging it to rile up others is wrong, but I disagree that you shouldn't post criticism with tags that are relevant to that post.  Especially since I might want to use those tags when looking through my blog.

So...yeah.  Long story short, I will attempt to put my thoughts here more often, rather than nowhere at all.  Maybe it'll make my head feel less cluttered.

For those who follow my in both places, there may be some overlap.

First, some reading I've been doing, with spoiler thoughts under cuts.  (Tumblr's Read More ain't got nothing on mid-post lj-cuts.)

Finished The Silvered by Tanya Huff yesterday.  It's the first book I bought for my tablet (should probably post about that) after getting hooked by the sample.  It was definitely way too easy, so I'll need to police myself or end up buying ALL the books.  Also need to look further into how the library e-books work.

I enjoyed The Silvered, though I'm kind of torn about the ending.  It seemed to wrap-up very quickly (and maybe a little too neatly) so I'm hoping that means there's a sequel in the works.  There was a lot going on that I wanted to explore more.  Suffice to say, when I read the hardcover sleeve in B&N, I was kind of so-so on it, but then I got a taste for the world in the sample I downloaded and was hooked.  I really liked her take on magic in that universe.

A couple of little spoilery things )

In addition to the temptations offered by the tablet, I'm trying to work through this stack of books.  So far I've finished Rosemary and Rue and The Fall of Reach.  I really liked the latter, much more than I thought I would.  I've never been interested in the Halo games, but that's mostly because they're FPS.  A few months ago I watched a 24 hr marathon of the Halo games with two of the GiantBomb guys, and the story seemed kind of interesting.  I really enjoyed Master Chief's story in this book, so much so that I re-watched the 24 hr marathon to better understand the plot in those games.  Could've used less Flood.

As much as it seemed up my alley, I didn't really like Rosemary and Rue. :<

And here's why... )So I like Toby's world but I don't think I'm going to continue with the series.  Not when I have other books on my list.

Not sure what I'll read next.  I've tried picking up Lightwing a couple of times but it's just not catching me.  I've read everything else by Tara K. Harper (both the cat and wolf series, except maybe Wolf in Night) so I thought this was a shoe-in, but the writing style is way different than what I remember of her other books.  That combined with a plot that's not hooking me has meant I struggle through a few pages, then forget about it for a week.  Might try Mutineer next, to keep my sci-fi love going strong.

Currently camped out at the closest B&N, with a crappy latte and a bagel, trying to recharge my phone so I can then switch cords and recharge the laptop. The news is saying about 75% of Richmond is out of power and I can believe it.

After the storm )

That's it for now. I've been checking on my circle of acquaintances and so far everyone has reported that they are well, if without power. We watched Irene head north on our phones last night, so I'm hoping my NY friends (and our NY office) weathered through okay. The national news seems mainly focused on NY, so I'm off to hunt down local news to see how my city fared.
wanderingflame: (Default)

After valiantly staying on almost all morning so I could get my work done (and despite flickering repeatedly), our power just gave up.

Now we wait. :F

Other than that, things are okay. I checked in with my best friend in Va beach & she said it's rough but they're inside with lots of food and water.

I hope everyone else along the coast is hanging in there!

My questions from [livejournal.com profile] write_rewrite

This was fun! :D

1. What is your honest opinion on Brotherhood? They seem to be mixed and I'm SORRY I'M TERRIBLE AT ASKING QUESTIONS /flails.

Haha, this is true! They are mixed. My honest opinion is that it is a great game but it was rushed out the door in order to be released a year after AC2. The improvements to combat are awesome, Cesare made a fantastic villain, and the addition of multi-player was a surprise bonus. Also, THE CROSSBOW. There are lots of little things I loved, but what made it feel rushed was the fact that it was still using the same game engine but trying to do even more. The first couple of times I was galloping through Rome and Ezio and his mount froze, I thought my game had died. It wasn't until it happened again and again that I noticed the rendering that was going on in the background and realized what the problem was. To me, that's super frustrating, and I would have been happy to wait months if it meant I didn't have put up with that.

2. Are there any little nonsensical things that just get on your nerves?

Oh my. In general? Probably quite a few. The first one that comes to mind is when people write "your" instead of "you're". That is such a bitchy thing to be annoyed by but I can't help it. I try to just roll my eyes the first time, but I've known people who do it habitually and it makes me batty. Oh! And I can't stand it when my husband leaves a bowl (or plate) on top of a stack in the sink instead of adding it to the bottom. That doesn't sound like it makes sense so I'll try to explain. The dishes tend to collect in the sink (no dishwasher) until I have time to blitz through them. I try to gather them as neatly as possible so there's still room in the sink if we need to fill a glass or pot at the faucet. We put all the silverware in one bowl and then stack the bowls, and plates go under the bowls. (OMG I sound neurotic by now...) So my husband will put his cereal bowl on top of the stack, on top of the silverware, so that it juts up like an unsteady bust on a pedestal. Somehow, this takes up more space and never fails to annoy me.

3. Do you have any dream that you wish/are determined to accomplish? What is it?

Hm... My dream has always been to get a novel published. I've been writing (in some shape or form) for almost 17 years, and I've had an original novel planned out for maybe 15 of those years. It's been completely overhauled twice and is probably due for a third rewrite but I just don't have the time or energy. Plus, in more recent years I've developed the weary acceptance that I'll never make it. My idea isn't that original or ground-breaking and I don't think my writing is that incredible that it would win over an editor in spite of the plot. I still think about it sometimes, especially since most of my favorite authors didn't start until later in life. (What I need to do is find a porn publisher. I seem to be good at that. XD)

Barring that, I am determined to get back to Japan before I die, and to take my husband with me so I can show him all the cool places I used to haunt when I lived there.

4. What's your favorite kind of literature genre?

OH NO YOU DIDN'T. I thought this would be like "what type of music do you like?" but then I realize it's not that hard. My favorite genre is fantasy, plain and simple. I grew up on Mercedes Lackey and Tamora Pierce (among others) and occasionally delved into science-fiction, when it wasn't too heavy on the science. More recently, Brent Weeks' Night Angel trilogy tops my list as a favorite in that genre.

As a bullet point beneath that, I will say that the new "urban fantasy" genre is something I read a lot of nowadays. That's Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, and a bunch of others I don't read. (Talk about a saturated market...)

5. Aside from Assassin's Creed, what kind of games do you primarily play?

For the longest time, I only played JRPGs SquareEnix RPGs and to be fair, it was just Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. I grew up watching my older brother play video games and he really enjoyed the FF series so I got into it. FFX (and X-2, embarrassingly enough) and KH1 & 2 were my bread and butter for the longest time. Then I met Dante of DMC fame. XD That was my first real foray into action/adventure/hack-and-slash games, although I suppose KH technically is an action game since it's not menu-based fighting. I just don't consider it the same because it's such a truly SquareEnix game. Since falling so hard for Dante, I've ventured further into the adventure category with the AC games, Prince of Persia, Castlevania: Lord of Shadows, and Uncharted (though I've seen more than I've played).

So primarily Square RPGs and action/adventure/hack-and-slash. But on the side (or when my husband is hogging the PS3), I absolutely adore the Phoenix Wright series (adventure/visual novel?) and games that might be in the "casual gamer" category: Cooking Mama, Plants vs Zombies, Big Bang Mini. (I think I over-answered the question...again.)

This almost seems unfair because I think a total of 3 people read this journal but here we go anyway! Taken from [livejournal.com profile] manic_intent.

The first ten people to comment in this post get to request that I write a drabble of any pairing/character of their choosing. In return, they have to post this in their journal, regardless of their ability level.

Even though she's hardly ever on LJ anymore, I called my bestest girl [livejournal.com profile] surichan to offer her a slot and she gave me three possible ideas. Now I just have to pick one!

I've completely stalled out on the two AC meme prompts I was working on so perhaps this will get the creativity going again.

I'd like to share some pictures with you, specifically of the greatest cat in the world: Caboose. I'm a little new to this LJ Gallery thing so if something doesn't seem to be working, just let me know.

Here's to you, Caboose!

Also, I'd like to point out that my wonderful husband has created an absolutely darling website for Bakes By Sue, my mom's baking business. So not only does she now have fliers to spread around, but also a website full of images of almost everything she bakes. The themed cakes are really the best part but all the pictures are awesome in my completely unbiased opinion. ;D

Also #2, I just accepted a new position at work on Wednesday! Starting July 14th I will be taking over as Lease Administrator. Basically Cobb sells their copiers/printers/multi-function machines to a leasing company (for example, Great America) and then the customer is paying that company for the lease, instead of us. But we still make money off of service contracts and supplies. The Leasing Administrator will be the liaison between Cobb and the leasing company; provide the sales reps with the leasing information they need to discuss with the customer; contact Cobb's warehouse about staging and delivery status of equipment; and receive initial paperwork for a sale. It's going to be more responsibility and a lot busier, but I'm looking forward to that since currently, I've been spending too much time trying to find stuff to keep me busy because the sales side of my job has been slow. Plus, I'm also thrilled to be out of a comp-pay scale, because it really sucks to have that pressure to "sell" appointments in order to make more money.

The irony is, after my first week in the new position, I'll be taking a week off to spend time with Anders' family, who will be visiting then. But everyone at work was very understanding so I'm going to do my best to work hard and keep up when I come back. Of course, the end of the month is also the most hectic time as everyone struggles to get all the paperwork in order so the billing can be processed, so we can finish the month on a high sales note. So when Susan (Admin. Manager) told the other girls in the Admin dept. that I'd work a week, take a week off and then come back for the end of the month, they all kind of laughed and looked at me like I was crazy. ^__^; Oh well. I'll do my best!

What first started out as a brief review of the concert, with a small focus on Hikki's outlandish outfits, quickly grew into this detailed account (or as detailed as I could get without being too repetitive) of the live dvd. I think I'll keep this preface short and simple, though. There are plenty of screen shots embedded in the review, just keep your eyes out for text that is actually a link. And without further ado, enjoy the show ;)

I hate when suddenly it's late and I realize my entire night just got wasted doing nothing. >__<* There was a meeting in the Matrix, which ended up being kind of circular and pointless, and I think I watched more of the tv I'd left on than the computer screen, though I did read everything that was said.

Sometimes, I think I just like to hear myself talk. XD Well, that might not be the case, but even though there doesn't seem to be a real reason for a dissertation such as this, I wrote one anyway. And I'm even setting it to public so I can spam the rest of LJ, instead of just you lovely people. Regardless of my reasons, I sat down and babbled quite a bit about Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny. I tried to keep it spoiler-free, so if there's anything I missed, it's mild. Real spoilers are in ()'s and the text must be high-lighted to be read. The Seed section is mostly just me saying, "This show sure is spiffy!" whereas for Seed Destiny I actually listed things I like and things I don't like.

Click only if you dare....I wasn't kidding when I said 'dissertation'  )

I am in Mabou now and aside from this chair being very low in comparison with the desk, this is the coolest place in the world. XD More later. I'm wasting precious reading time.

All you can drink bar, comfy chairs, manga galore....I think I'm going to the one in Kawagoe tomorrow. *___* Meeeeeelooooon soooodaaaaaa....

The only downer was that volumes 16 and 17 of BoI suck like Hoovers. But now I know not to buy them. XD I have to gather my things now so I can get to the counter before my hour is over. ^___~

First up, amusing Engrish images I snapped with my phone. Which is why the quality is not GODLIKE )

And then recently, I've been fooling around in PSP...Once again less-than-Godlike quality )

I've been feeling less than 100% the last couple of days and I don't know why, I just have. It frustrated me last night when I tried writing an intellectual review of quite possibly my favorite author ever, only to have it come out like five-day-old carp, and has further irritated me simply because no one likes to feel like poo, let along unexplainable poo. >___o I'm going to sleep now and hopefully tomorrow will be loads of fun despite this stupid "I'm not a cold and I'm not allergies but I'll make you feel funky anyway!" feeling.

My formerly awesome image host seems to be having issues today so if some of the pictures don't load, try rereshing the page, or right-clicking and choosing "show picture".

In other news, my new kotatsu is here and works like a dream. ::curls up under it, purring:: Ah the warmth.... ^__^;; Sadly, it is not strong enough to heat up my whole room but when you stretch your legs out under it or just have it sitting nearby, cranked up (as it is now), it's quite nice.

So after a little more work, I was able to get the third part of this short story done. *cheers* Didn't take too long to get it done, once I escaped distractions, which pleases me. Most of this part is a flashback, starting after the first line and ending before the last line. Just in case anyone was confused. This here translator was trying to figure out where the sound of fire was when she suddenly thought, "Ah, duh. She must be sitting in front of a fire, remembering all this."

The first two parts can be found here and here, for those needing a refresher. I have to say, I was impressed that while reading this (in Japanese), I understood enough to get chills at one point. I don't know why seeing it in English doesn't cause the same effect, but go figure. ^__^;;

Also, I've decided from here on out to translate what sounds the best, as opposed to making sure the words are as close to the original Japanese as possible. Because several times in this chapter I had sentences that were literal translations, but were so blah they were almost like reading a textbook or manual. "The handle was turned by Jane. The door opened. On the other side of the door was a person." Do you really want to call that a "short story"? ~__~;

~__~ Woke up at 7:30, got dressed and showered, caught the bus ontime, and somehow when I arrived on campus, the bell was ringing already. >__<;; But that's okay, I've decided to quit this first period class. Suffice to say I don't need to take it and any less stress in my life (like having to get up disgustingly early two days a week instead of one) would be lovely. After all, despite it being a linguistics class, it was aimed specifically for second-language learners of English, which I am not. ^__~;; Now if only I can find a way to contact my teacher. @___@

Blarg...still quite tired. I would like to go sleep in the library but I will try to stay here and be awake and productive. Watched Bleach episode 8 this morning...*___* The art got a little better, so yay for that. And wee for Kon's cuteness.

Man, it's Thanksgiving. Happy freakin' Turkey Day, as my step-dad might say. ^___~ (even though where you are, it's probably still Wed. night) Michael and I have decided (or I decided and suggested to Michael and he doesn't seem opposed) to say, 'Screw you, Japanese, with your lack of turkeys and mashed potatos and other tasty Thanksgiving dishes! We shall eat pumpkin pie (provided it cooks all right) and then go out for dinner at Outback Steakhouse!' XD Not tonight, but this weekend there shall be much feastings on cow. And I demand to be served by someone with an Australian accent or my dinner should be free. *CHEEKY*

In case some of you didn't already know this, now you do. >__<* Especially when they say they'll email you and then don't and your already grumpy about this particular person/situation and your a Murphy so you've got a stubborn streak that would slay a mule so it's not like you're going to email him. >________<* Fine. Not like I was really looking forward to eating something hot and rejuvinating like curry or ramen at the school's cafeteria (since it's like winter outside) while I enjoyed chatting with a friend, ANYWAY. And then this IBM ThinkPad (and that's about all it does: think, and slowly at that) takes an eternity to load and now I'm quite grumpy. But in 9 minutes I have to meet Morgan-sensei again to help with that graduate project of his, so I'd best snap out of it, eh?

Hm, make that 6 minutes. >___<* MEH. This grumpy icon is actually quite appropriate considering that even though the typhoon (#22, they don't get names here) is in KYUSHU, it's raining like God has called for the building of the second Great Arc, or something.

< / sarcasm and ranting >

Ack, gotta run. Hope everyone's having a better day wherever you are. ^__~;;

OMGTHERAIN. Stop. Will need boat soon. Stop. Send help. Stop.

ps- Boys still suck. Finish.

The best part? I have to go back out into the rain in about 20 minutes or so. >__<* I forgot Kazumi and I had a date to see "Two Brothers" until sometime this morning. So Ruza, I apologize but I probably won't be online like I said I would, unless Kazumi calls at the last minute to cancel.

Work for the project went rather well, will possibly explain when I return, depending on just how tired I am. I have first block tomorrow. Feel my soul cry. T__T
